It’s February – the shortest month of the year, and the one that many associate with love. Regardless of how you feel about Valentine’s Day, celebrating the power of love is always a worthy endeavor. But while most people focus on directing their loving energy towards their relationship partner or even towards loving the self, there are a variety of ways to expand that sense of thoughtful joy to everyone who surrounds us.
Showing love to the people in your community, whether they are neighbors, shop-keepers, teachers, or bus drivers will not only lift their spirits; it will also help strengthen your sense of belonging. Creating a valuable support network in your community can improve your quality of life.
At Integrative Nutrition, we believe that love is more than just an emotional sentiment. Love has the power to heal and transform. That’s why our curriculum teaches that Vitamin L is just as important as all of the vitamins and minerals that we get from food!
Here are 4 ways to open your heart and share love with the people in your community:
Give compliments. One of the best ways to make someone feel special and appreciated is to give them a compliment. It's incredible how simply saying that someone looks great today, or that you like their hairstyle, can instantly put a smile on their face and leave them feeling good all day long. Remember that happiness and love are contagious, so by sharing these kind words with others, you’ll start a ripple effect of positivity that impacts people you don’t even know.
Donate your time. If you’re unable to financially invest in the local efforts of your community, then give the gift of time by volunteering to participate at a place or event. In many ways, showing up and using your mind, hands, or voice is even more valuable than writing a check.
Support a local business. Show your neighborhood some love by shopping at a locally-owned business whenever possible. Your positive patronage will show that you appreciate their products or services and help them continue to enrich the local community with their presence. Shopping locally for food at the nearest farmer’s market will also provide you with fresher and tastier foods, while supporting the movement for sustainable agriculture and a healthier planet.
Use social media to inspire. If you’re active in participating with your virtual community, using social media to spread the love is a great way to connect on a deeper level with the people who aren’t geographically close. Simple messages of gratitude and happiness, or using uplifting photos or quotes, can make a difference in someone’s day. Who knows, your loving post could even go virtual and affect thousands of people!
