It seems inevitable that we, or someone we love, will have the cold or flu this winter. Sneezing, coughing, and lack of hand washing, pass the pesky germs along. If we are stressed, have a lower immunity, or are sleep deprived our chances of getting sick, increases.
Research has shown that over-the-counter medications do nothing to help children. But you can certainly help ease symptoms and reduce the duration and severity of cold symptoms, in children and adults naturally.
Try these natural remedies to avoid the cold and reduce symptoms:
ACV & Oregano Oil
Fight infections with apple cider vinegar and oregano oil. A report from the USDA proclaims the antimicrobial effect of oregano oil and findings from a study conducted by Georgetown University states that oregano oil helps to overcome severe viral and bacterial infections. The health benefits of ACV are widely known. Specifically, drinking a little ACV in warm water helps drain sinuses when a cold has set in. My favorite brand is Bragg’s Organic Apple Cider Vinegar.
Supplement Your Vitamins and Minerals
Increase respiratory protection and immune system support by adding Vitamin C and zinc. This combo has been reported to reduce the duration and severity of cold symptoms. Add vitamin C-rich foods like citrus fruits, leafy greens, and peppers to your diet, and eat cashews, chickpeas, almonds, and pumpkin seeds for zinc.
Thin the mucous membranes using a steam bath. Boil a pot of water and then use a towel and lean over to capture the steam. Breathe deeply to inhale the steam into your lungs. Add herbs like eucalyptus, peppermint, thyme or rosemary to the pot to aid in decongesting. You can also take a hot shower.
Avoid the phlegm forming foods; including dairy products, white sugar and refined carbs like white flour, bread and other gluten foods. Don’t forget to drink warm liquids like vegetable broth and herbal teas to aid in thinning mucous membranes
Lack of sleep strains the immune system. Make sure to get plenty of rest and allow yourself time to sleep it off.
The easiest way to avoid passing germs along is to wash your hands with warm soapy water. Use liberal amount of soap an rub your hands for 20-30 seconds.
To maintain a healthy immune system, make sure to incorporate moderate exercise regularly into your routine. If you already have a cold, light exercise will help clear out the respiratory system.
Our favorite personal cold remedy elixir is a tea using lemon, ginger, raw honey, apple cider vinegar and cayenne pepper. It really warms you up and helps relieve symptoms and detoxify the body.
