This September, the Northeast Organic Farming Association of New York (NOFA-NY) will host its 3rd annual Locavore Challenge, a month-long initiative to encourage consumers to eat organic, locally produced food. New this year is the 30 Challenges in 30 Days calendar, which features a daily challenge, ranging from planting an herb or window garden to joining the Just Label It campaign to label GMOs.
Each day also suggests a “food of the day,” and every item is something you can find at a local farmers market. We recently took a trip to the Union Square Greenmarket right here in NYC, camera in tow, and spotted tons of tasty finds! Check out our pictures below, and then head to your local farmers market to pick up some seasonal produce. (That’s the daily challenge for Saturday, September 8!)
Ready to use all those farmers market finds? Last year we celebrated Locavore Month with this healthy recipe for Fresh Corn, Tomato, Avocado and Black Bean Salad. Here are a few more recipes that we’re looking forward to this September:
Spaghetti Squash Marinara
Brussels Sprouts with Chestnuts
Spicy Roasted Okra
Baked Caraway Sweet Potato with Rosemary
Heirloom Tomato Tart
Will you attempt the Locavore Challenge this September?
