We’ve all heard the saying “you are what you eat” but now it seems that we can go even further to say “you are what you put on your skin, hair and nails.”
In the beauty industry, it’s tough to avoid chemicals. Even companies that sell “organic” or “natural” products contain a certain amount of chemicals that could be life threatening.
Horst Rechelbacher, founder and former owner of Aveda tells The London Telegraph that he has had enough. After selling Aveda to Estee Lauder in 1997, instead of retiring, Rechelbacher decided to develop his own line of 100 percent organic beauty products.
“Don’t put anything on you’re skin that you wouldn’t eat” Rechelbacher says as he discusses the different chemicals that can be found in various beauty products. What keeps “Kiss-proof” lipstick on for so long? Plastic coating. Or what makes nail polish so shiny? Phthalates, a chemical attributed to cancer, infertility, and low birth weight. .

So what is a girl to do in a world where beauty regimes rule? You could consider using Rechelbacher’s line “Intelligent Nutrients” which he now has down to an almost 100% organic formula, using several ingredients from plants that he grows on his estate in Wisconsin.
Another approach would be to try making your own beauty products, like this recipe for homemade lip gloss.
