Pure Yoga and Integrative Nutrition Present: An Evening of Yoga and Nutrition

December 16, 2009, 7:00pm- 9:15pm

You are invited to attend a very special evening at Pure Yoga’s new Upper West Side studio to celebrate its opening week.  Enjoy an evening yoga class suited to all levels of practice with Integrative Nutrition graduate and certified yoga instructor Erica Mather.  Erica will teach a yoga class from 7:00-8:00pm.
Joshua will lead an interactive learning session from 8:00-9:15pm that covers nutrition, the science of Ayurveda, and the overarching elements of a holistic lifestyle.  You will have an opportunity to get your questions answered about nutrition and how to best nourish yourself through food and lifestyle changes.

Free. Please RSVP by December 15 to Elena.Pezzo@pureyoga.com

Please note that this event will be at the Pure West Side studio, located at 204 W. 77th Street @ Amsterdam Avenue in Manhattan.

Originating in the East, the practice of yoga continues to gain popularity in the West.  Yoga exercises and philosophy have become widely acknowledged for generating many health benefits.  In a stressful world of high tech and fast paced living, more and more people are turning to yoga to ameliorate the deteriorating influences of contemporary lifestyles.  Yoga practices, which date back several thousand years, offer a science for personal evolution.

Just as there are many different ways of eating, there are many different types of yoga.  A student can get the most benefit when they discover which style is best suited for them and find a teacher with whom they feel connected.  Pure Yoga offers classes for beginners and advanced yogis, in styles ranging from Ashtanga to Yin Yoga, from Hot to Vinyasa Flow, Anusara, Jivamukti and more.  What style of yoga do you practice?  Do you have recommendations for beginner yogis?

Happy Thanksgiving!

Traditions of Gratitude

Thanksgiving begins the holiday season with traditions of gratitude and giving, gatherings with family and friends and of course, delicious food that we look forward to all year.  However, there are millions of people who are less fortunate, that do not have homes, food or clothing.  This year, to celebrate Thanksgiving, Integrative Nutrition will make donations to Habitat for Humanity and Food For The Poor, two organizations that are dedicated to helping others in need.

Habitat for Humanity has built over 300,000 houses around the world, providing more than 1.5 million people in 3,000 communities with safe, decent, affordable shelter.

Food For The Poor is the number one international relief and development charity in the United States, feeding 2 million people every day. Now celebrating its 27th year of operation, Food For The Poor  works primarily in 17 countries in the Caribbean, Latin America, as well as the United States, to assist the poorest of the poor.

Integrative Nutrition would like to appreciate our community for all that you do.  We are thankful for all the students who are inspired to change the world, the graduates who are out there making a difference, and our teachers, the leaders in the field of health and wellness. We could never do this without you! We are very happy to assist these organizations in their efforts to help others in need. Please consider making your holiday even more meaningful by making a donation or volunteering your time.

Wishing you good health and abundance this Thanksgiving!

Nourishing the Teacher by Graduate Danny Arguetty

Integrative Nutrition 2004 graduate Danny Arguetty has written a beautiful book, Nourishing the Teacher, inquires, contemplations & insights on the path of yoga.  IIN is producing so many quality professionals in the health and wellness field.  We are so proud of our grads and their accomplishments. We congratulate Danny on this wonderful achievement, and hope to hear from more graduates that are out there changing the world!

The following is a description of Danny’s book:

The art and science of yoga invites us into an ever-evolving quest of relationship, both within and beyond ourselves. As we choose to cultivate and nourish our inner teacher through an inquisitive lens, we are better able to step into the dynamic dance of the outer world.  Nourishing the Teacher is a text intended to facilitate and highlight the multifaceted and fluid experience we humans have been gifted in the embodied realm. Through contemplations, asanas, off the mat investigations, structured breath practices, meditations, inspirational readings and creative rituals the book offers guidance in the form of inquiry.  Nourishing the Teacher utilizes the vast intelligence of yoga philosophy, nature, and ancient cultures to invoke innate insights, that with individual participation, ignite a path more fully aligned with the vast intelligence of nature and the pulsing beauty of our own hearts.”

Giving more than thanks on Thanksgiving: IIN to help feed the needy

Integrative Nutrition will join forces with City Harvest to help provide Thanksgiving dinner for families in the New York Area. This is just a small way of showing thanks for all the good fortune we’ve had this year. As we grow and expand, Integrative Nutrition is so happy to give back to the community.  IIN and City Harvest share similar values in promoting nutrition education, locally grown food, and preventative health care.  Now serving New York City for more than 25 years, City Harvest is the world’s first food rescue organization, dedicated to feeding the city’s hungry men, women and children.  This year, City Harvest will collect over 25 million pounds of excess food from all segments of the food industry, including restaurants, grocers, corporate cafeterias, manufacturers, and farms. This food is then delivered free of charge to nearly 600 community food programs throughout New York City using a fleet of trucks and bikes as well as volunteers on foot. Each week, City Harvest helps over 260,000 hungry New Yorkers find their next meal.  City Harvest also addresses hunger’s underlying causes by supporting affordable access to nutritious food in low-income communities, educating individuals, families, and communities in the prevention of diet-related diseases, channeling a greater amount of local farm food into high-need areas, and enhancing the ability of their agency partners to feed hungry men, women and children.

City Harvest works hard to provide enough food and turkeys to help the agencies they serve provide Thanksgiving meals to their clients.  They currently provide food to more than 600 soup kitchens and food pantries throughout NYC.  City Harvest is kicking off the annual Daily News Readers Care to Feed the Hungry Food Drive this week. This is an annual citywide food drive that raises nearly 1 million pounds of food during the holidays.

If you would like to contribute to City Harvest please visit their website http://www.cityharvest.org/ to find out more.  Also, please pass this information on to others so they can help too.  Thank you.

Flu Tips

Whether you decide to get the H1N1 vaccination or not, you can take precautions to avoid the flu or to help reduce symptoms once you recognize them.  Below are some suggestions to lower your risk and ease the onslaught of those symptoms.

Wash hands frequently, especially when arriving at work, after shaking hands, using a phone, handling money, etc.

Gargle 2-3 times a day with warm salt water. Use Listerine if you don’t trust salt. H1N1 takes 2-3 days after initial infection in the throat to proliferate and show symptoms. Simple gargling prevents proliferation. Don’t underestimate this simple, inexpensive and powerful method.

Boost natural immunity with foods and supplements. See this for immune boosting tips.

Use supplements Vitamin C, E, and Zinc, as well as Oreganol (wild oregano oil), 5 drops (no more) in some water taken 2-3 times per day can wipe out flu virus when symptoms start to come on.

Drink warm liquids often. These will drown the virus out of the throat and into the stomach where they die and leave you free to be healthy and happy.

Use hypoallergenic natural hand sanitizers.

Use sanitizing towelettes to clean work surfaces such as phones, chair arms, desks, computer keyboards, door handles, door knobs, etc.

Cover your mouth with your arm while coughing or sneezing and promptly wash your hands afterward.

Minimize exposure to others who are ill.

Elderberry syrup aka Sambucol is a very good immune booster for flu.

Oscillococcinum, a homeopathic remedy, works very well for many once you’ve come down with the flu.

Here are some other alternative remedies for flu + cold.

How are you dealing with flu season?  Do you have any recommendations?

Will the Soda Pop?

Recently the American Academy of Family Physicians announced an agreement with Coca Cola, whereby Coke would give a six-figure grant to the AAFP to develop web content on beverages and maintaining a healthy lifestyle.  This outraged many in the health and wellness field.  There were calls for the AAFP to break their deal with the soda giant, denounce any health benefits of sugary beverages, and proclaim them a piece of the health crisis pie by contributing to America’s growing obesity problem, especially among children.

Walter Willett, guest speaker at Integrative Nutrition and Harvard School of Public Health (HSPH) nutrition and health researcher, has written a letter to the President-elect of the AAFP, giving them an alternative to the deal with Coke.  "I’d like to offer your organization the opportunity to link to our website’s content and return the funding to Coca-Cola," says Willett in the letter.  HSPH’s popular Nutrition Source website contains multiple pages of accessible content on how to achieve a healthy diet.

Willett agrees that it is important to provide information about how people can incorporate foods and drinks they love into an overall healthy lifestyle. He points out however, that research overwhelmingly suggests that the consumption of sugar-laden sodas is a leading cause of obesity in the U.S. today and that children are particularly at risk.  For a copy of the complete letter go here.
Do you agree that the AAFP should return the money to Coca Cola and provide quality information on how to reduce sugary beverages for a healthy lifestyle?  What are your thoughts?
