Dr. Neal Barnard on How to Lower Cholesterol Naturally

Here’s to the power of food as medicine!

Niacin, a type of B vitamin, has long been prescribed to help lower cholesterol. However, two new studies suggest that it may actually do more harm than good.

The startling studies from New England Journal of Medicine showed that niacin can cause serious side effects and, what’s more, neither study showed any significant benefits to the drugs.

Is TellSpec About to Change the Food Industry? [VIDEO]

Technology has transformed the way we live—for better and for worse—and yet it hasn’t been able to combat the ongoing global health crisis. That might be about to change.

A new device called TellSpec provides a simple way for consumers to learn the truth about the food they’re putting into their bodies. By simply pointing the device at any edible item, consumers can learn the nutrient content and ingredients of their food, including any chemicals, allergens, or additives that might be cleverly disguised on the nutrition label.

Integrative Nutrition in Men’s Journal

Over here at Integrative Nutrition, we’ve been seeing the ripple effect for some time, and now the media is beginning to take note of our global wellness movement. Case in point: an article in Men’s Journal titled “The Rise of the Health Coach.”

The piece unpacks why Health Coaches are so essential in our current medical system, and the impact they’re beginning to have on how doctors interact with their patients. Specifically, while doctors continue to own the role of diagnosing diseases and prescribing medicines, Health Coaches are increasingly tasked with helping patients implement daily lifestyle changes.

VIDEO: Joshua Rosenthal Interviews Dr. Mehmet Oz

What role can Health Coaches play in the ongoing healthcare crisis in America? A very significant one, says Dr. Mehmet Oz, who recently sat down with IIN founder Joshua Rosenthal to discuss the issue.

Their probing conversation explored the different roles of doctors, patients, and Health Coaches in our current system, and how each can help contribute to a wellness revolution. Rather than overhauling the entire healthcare system, Dr. Oz says, Health Coaches should function as an added layer between doctors and patients, helping patients be healthier and doctors be better practitioners.

Health Coach Training Program Diary: Chapter 8 [VIDEO]

Integrative Nutrition student Ilene has just six modules left in her Health Coach Training program, and the IIN film crew checked in to see how she’s feeling as the program nears its end. Though she says “it’s kind of sad” to think about finishing up her education, Ilene feels ready to take on the world as a Health Coach, and is already well on her way. She’s coaching clients, continuing to learn about the ways that wellness affects our society and our world, and creating new healthy recipes.

We are the Wellness Revolution [Video]

When I started Integrative Nutrition, I was just one person who felt that if I could improve what people eat, I would play a role in making the world a better place.

Every year, healthcare costs increase while overall health decreases; people continue to eat poorly, gain weight, and depend on medications and operations to maintain their health.

The World Health Organization (WHO) predicts that, in China, up to 57 percent of the population will be overweight or obese by 2015. They are rapidly catching up to America, where 69 percent of adults are overweight or obese. Overweight people now outnumber undernourished people in the world.

That is why Health Coaches are more important now than ever before.

Coach Like a Pro: The #1 Secret

Are you ready to hear it? Come a little closer. I’m going to tell you the secret, right off the bat:

It’s not what we give our clients, but what we help them let go of, that really counts.

What do our clients need to let go of? Illusions.

Here are some examples of untrue illusions that clients cling to:

  • It’s too late.
  • I don’t have the time or money to be healthy.
  • I’m not strong or flexible enough to try something like yoga.
  • It’s selfish to take time for myself.
  • If I can’t change something overnight, by myself, it’s not worth it and/or I’m not good enough.

Untrue thoughts like this block positive, sustainable change.
